Maharees (Na Machairí) is a 3 mile long sandy spit jutting out into Tralee Bay. Sourrounded by the sea on 3 sides this area is a natural environment of sand dunes, sea , surf and the Maharees Islands (Seven Hogs). The largest is Oileán tSeannaig and it contains remnants of an Early Christian monastic settlement founded by St. Senach in the 7th century. Many Christian artefacts remain such as the Chi Rho Cross at Kilshannig graveyard out at the tip of the Maharees.
The sand dunes are a unique ecosystem, home to the rare Natterjack toad which can be found in significant numbers. Lough Gill is also a major breeding ground for the toad. Whooper Swans and the Bewick’s mute swans are also found here. Unspoilt beaches are found on both sides of the peninsula which separates Brandon Bay on the west side from Tralee Bay to the east. Watersports and surfing are a popular activity. Local Camping sites and caravan parks are a hive of sounds and activity during summer months. A true family holidays will be your guarantee here.
