The legend of Castlegregory

15.00

When the Reverend Arthur Blennerhassett Rowan, Rector of Kilgobbin parish, was passing through the village of Castlegregory around 1850, he spotted a large inscribed stone embedded in the wall of one of the houses. On further inspection, Rowan was approached by local man Patrick Commane who regaled him with the tragic tale of Gregory Hoare, founder of the castle in the early 1500’s, and his descendants. Having been destroyed by Cromwell’s forces on 5 May 1649, the last remains of the castle were removed during the 1880’s. The story, first published by Rev. Rowan in 1851, forms the core of Rev. A. B. Rowan and the Legend of Castlegregory.
